Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said it right: “We have enough holes in the dam, enough warts and zits where we have to get a lot better.” NU’s 20-14 win over Wisconsin was impressive, but, yes, it might take more to beat Minnesota on Saturday.
Offense: B
The O-line has been terrific, with Fitzgerald singling out right guard Matt Frazier for improvement. Tailback Justin Jackson (162 rush yards) is quick, slippery and adept at setting up blocks. Trevor Siemian continues to miss some open receivers.
Defense: B+
Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon gashed this unit for a career-high 259 yards, exposing back-end flaws on rips of 58 and 61 yards. But the front seven generated pressure, the corners were excellent and Godwin Igwebuike saved NU with three picks.
Special teams: A-
Punter Chris Gradone was at one with the soggy turf, downing his first four punts at the 6-, 4-, 9- and 6-yard lines. Jack Mitchell knocked home two short field goals.
Coaching: A-
Fitzgerald, who gets an A+ in stubbornness, says he has not changed his philosophy. So it’s a coincidence that he’s now using trick plays and making gutsy decisions (going on fourth-and-4 from the Wisconsin 17). OK, coach.
