Recently, my wife and I were about to transfer from the CTA Red Line to the Brown Line at the Belmont station. A young woman, who was rushing in ahead of us, didn’t realize that she had dropped a wad of cash on the platform. A man grabbed the money, darted into the train, handed the money to the young woman, and managed to get back out to the platform just as the doors were closing.

The young woman could scarcely believe her good fortune. Shaking her head in amazement she confided to me, “It was more than a $100 folded up. I’m a waitress and had just left my shift!”

A few days later, it was my turn to benefit from the kindness of an unknown stranger. Two weeks ago, I rode my bike from the Division Street tunnel on the Lakefront Trail to the little peninsula near the Museum of Science and Industry, at which point I suddenly realized that I had lost my cell phone somewhere along the way. A search for the phone on my return trip was fruitless.

Imagine, then, my great surprise upon reaching home to learn that some good Samaritans had not only found my phone near Oak Street Beach, but, using my stored contact information, had also managed to discover my address and return the phone to our doorman. How I wish they had left names and addresses so that I could properly thank them!
