Hometown

Hometown Christian Church: 4340 W. 87th St. — The Christian Women’s Fellowship will host the Annual Spaghetti Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 27. Dinner will be followed by bingo. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages six to 12 years old. Children ages five and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Cathedral of Joy Family Life Center: 20401 Western Ave. — The annual National King’s Day service will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16. The Olympia Fields Ducks Youth Football and Cheer Organization and the Matteson Bears will be honored for making a positive impact on the youth of the community. Calvary Church: 16100 S. 104th Ave. — “Winter Wonderland,” a free family event, will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 21. Children’s activities include an obstacle course, sock-skating arena, snowball wars and carnival games with prizes. Entertainment includes “Waxed Hands,” a company of artists specializing in wax molds of hands, done in minutes and a horse-pulled trolley ride by Forest View Farms. Photo opportunities are available with “Frozen” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” characters. Food vendors include Beggar’s Pizza, El Famous Burrito and Short & Sassy-Tasty Treats. Cash and credit will be accepted. Guests are encouraged to donate new hats and gloves for children and adults in need in the community. Donations can be put on the giving tree. Presbyterian Church: 13401 S. Wolf Rd. — The Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group will meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Childcare is provided for children from infants to five years old. New moms are welcome. Winter session is Jan. 10 to March 28. The Welcome on Wednesdays (W.O.W.) Arts for Kids and Little W.O.W. will be held on Wednesdays from Jan. 18 to March 15. W.O.W will be held for grades one through eight from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Little W.O.W. will be held for ages four and five from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p. m. Supper is included for both programs. Back to God Ministries International: 6555 W. College Dr. — The Calvin College “January Series” lectures will be videostreamed live to Back to God Ministries International from 11:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from through Jan. 24. The lectures are free and open to the public. Featured speakers include Doris Kearns Goodwin, a world-renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist; Gary Haugen, CEO and founder of International Justice Mission, and Matthew Desmond, co-founder of the Justice and Poverty Project and recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” grant. Topics include global governance, human rights, race relations, health care reform and the gender gap in technology. Sacred Heart Church: 8245 W. 111th St. — For Human Trafficking Awareness Month, The Sacred Heart Domestic Violence Outreach Ministry and Pastor Jacek Wrona will host a presentation by Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart at 6 p.m. Jan. 17. Dart will discuss the work of his office to stop human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Father Charles Dahm, the Chicago Archdiocesan Director of Domestic Violence Outreach, will be the moderator. According to a news release, Dart is responsible for reforming the way the Cook County Sheriff’s Police handle prostitution arrests by offering rehabilitative services through the Sheriff’s Women’s Justice Program rather than jail time and for launching a national campaign to target the “johns” who exploit the prostitutes. Under Dart, the Child Exploitation Unit was founded, which pursues child pornography and human trafficking cases.
