Winter can’t be stopped, so life goes on in spite of its challenges.
Jan. 5, a clutch of young hockey players mixed it up on the Tower Rink in the shadow of the Northbrook Public Library, despite a temperature of 3 degrees above zero.
They weren’t the only ones out there in the elements. Since mid-December, the Northbrook Public Works Department has labored in the cold to stop the rush of icy water from at least a half-dozen water main breaks. Those include three on Jan. 3: on the 3200 block of Robincrest Drive, the 1000 block of Waukegan Road and the 2500 block of Farnsworth Lane, affecting 102 homes and six businesses, according to public works.
Winter’s travails, according to the calendar, are supposed to end on March 20. But don’t bet on it. The winter solstice signaled the start of the season on Dec. 21 — three days after 5 inches of snow fell on Northbrook, and 633 tons of salt were spread on her streets.
