After retiring a few years ago, I began golfing at the nine-hole South Shore course. I’m not what anyone would call a good golfer, but I delight in the occasional accurate shot. And, so what if I keep score, not by the number of strokes, but by counting if I end up with more or fewer golf balls than when I started? Mark Twain wrote that “golf is a good walk spoiled,” but for me, South Shore is an enjoyable lakeside walk, all for $9. One thing that would spoil the experience would be greatly increasing the price to offset the cost of a championship-level course. I, for one, would gladly give up more sand traps for keeping the fees affordable.
