White Sox starter James Shields will stop throwing as he continues to rehab from his right lat strain, while White Sox manager Rick Renteria declined to provide an update on Carlos Rodon’s rehab from biceps bursitis.
Shields played catch on Tuesday but reported no progress. He’s been on the disabled list since April 18 and appears nowhere close to returning.
“It’s kind of a slower process than I thought right now,” Shields said. “It’s not really responding the way I’d like it to be. We’re just going to keep moving forward.”
Renteria said they would let the lat “calm down” before proceeding to throw.
Shields seemed discouraged by the lack of progress.
“I want to be out there as quickly as possible,” he said. “My body feels good. The rest of my arm feels amazing right now. That’s the good news. Getting some really good workouts in and I’m going to cheer these guys on. Just continue the process right now….We’re going to continue to keep working right now, get this thing right.”
Renteria declined to update the media on Rodon. The Sox lefty has refused to talk to the media during his rehab, and the Sox have said little either.
“He continues to be on his throwing program, and he’s doing well, he’s progressing well,” Renteria said.
Is he on the mound yet?
“He’s doing his throwing program and he’s progressing well,” Renteria repeated.
So is that a “no”?
“He’s throwing and he’s progressing well,” Renteria repeated again. “And we’re very happy with how he’s moving along.”
