Reading the comments of President Donald Trump supporters in Henry County was astounding. How could their opinions be so divergent not only from my own, but from those of countless diplomats, scientists, psychologists, military leaders, health care experts, legislators, justices, the list could go on. Their comments beg the question, “What are their sources of information?” I wish the interviews could have been more in-depth. Their mistrust of “media” makes me think that their version of news comes from suspect sources where controversy, bias, scare tactics and fabrication are the order of the day.

Today we are hearing about efforts by those in the Trump administration to keep the president from completely going off the rails and contemplating a nuclear attack. Far from a wait-and-see posture, we are at the point when responsible leadership in the government, instead of discussing legislation to limit the executive power of the president, should be taking action to remove the current occupant, who every day shows himself less and less competent to hold the office. If Republican leaders do not take action, they will be responsible for, at best, the loss of America’s stature as world leader and ability to claim theirs is a responsible party, and at worst, allowing the start of nuclear conflict.
