Leadership Academy applications available
The Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its 2018 Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy consists of eight five-hour sessions that will begin on Aug. 9 and run through Nov. 15. Designed to provide emerging leaders with insight and understanding of the economic, government, and not-for-profit dimensions of Valparaiso, the program is a collaboration between the Valparaiso Chamber and Purdue University. Porter Lakes to launch preschool program
Porter Lakes Elementary will offer a half-day preschool program for 4-year-olds beginning in August for the 2018-19 school year. Students must be 4 years old by Aug. 1 to be eligible. The program will be taught by a fully-licensed teacher. Instruction and curriculum will be based on the Indiana Early Learning Foundations. The following sessions will be available: 8:45-11:15 a.m. Monday through Friday; 12:15-2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8:45-11:15 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and 12:15-2:45 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cost is $15 per day. A $60 registration/supply fee will be due with application. All times, fees and general components of the program are subject to School Board approval at the Board meeting April 12. Library to host writer’s workshop
Hammond Public Library will offer a free Writer’s Workshop from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the library, 564 State St., Hammond. Led by Naleighna Kai, national bestselling author of “Open Door Marriage,” the workshop is designed for adults of all levels of writing experience. Basketball clinic for Boys and Girls Club members
Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana’s Valparaiso Club will host a free Basketball Clinic for Club members from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 354 W. Jefferson St., Valparaiso. Members, ages 5 to 18, are welcome to register with a current Club membership. Facilitated by Darryl Jackson and sponsored by Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club, the clinic will teach skills for the game, offer basketball play, sportsmanship and team building activities. Bikes on Trains program returns to South Shore Line
The South Shore Line’s Bikes on Trains program has begun and will run through October. Commuters can bring their bikes on two morning and evening rush-hour weekday trains in addition to select weekend trains. Bike cars are clearly marked and are bike rack-equipped in addition to regular seating so that passengers can ride in the car near their bicycle. Bikes are not permitted during special Chicago events such as Lollapalooza and the Chicago Air and Water Show. More information is at mysouthshoreline.com.
Open registration at adult learning center
The TriTown Learning Center, an affiliate of the Center of Workforce Innovations, has open registration and classes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, 3-7 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays for individuals to prepare for their high school equivalency diploma (GED) at 1515 Lincoln Highway, Schererville. Classes are free to Indiana residents. Skill training also is available in welding, certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, CDL, production technician, HVAC technician, EMT, pharmacy technician, retail sales and hospitality.
