A fire that ripped through a large apartment building Saturday afternoon in Justice displaced dozens of residents, according to a fire official.
Firefighters responded to the scene in the 8400 block of South 88th Avenue just before 2 p.m. and found the blaze primarily in a third-floor corner apartment.
Roberts Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Walter Sherman said 35 to 40 residents were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
He said one firefighter was treated on the scene as a precaution for heat exhaustion and released.
Sherman said the fire damaged several surrounded apartments on the third floor, and the entire building sustained smoke and water damage.
He said the building would require an extensive rehab before anyone can move back in.
“The roof’s gone to a third of the building,” Sherman said.
The Red Cross was on the scene assisting residents and a PACE bus provided air-conditioned relief on Saturday.
The four-alarm fire drew assistance from several surrounding fire districts, Sherman said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
