Winthrop Harbor police were able to thwart a possible armed robbery late last month and solved two subsequent armed robberies, the latest one last week, with the help of surrounding departments.
Around 10 p.m. on July 26, an officer saw two men walking up to the Shell gas station at 901 Sheridan Road, according to a news release. Both were attempting to conceal their faces with their shirts and one was armed with a handgun, the release said.
The officer called for back-up, activated his emergency lights and drove into the parking lot to confront the men. The suspects did not enter the station and fled, jumping numerous fences while trying to escape, according to the release.
Zion police assisted in setting up a perimeter, two people of interest were located and a handgun was recovered.
On the next day, also around 10 p.m., Winthrop Harbor police heard that Pleasant Prairie police in Wisconsin were chasing a suspect in an armed robbery and the suspect crossed the state line and headed into Winthrop Harbor.
Winthrop Harbor police joined with Pleasant Prairie and Kenosha County Sheriffs Office police officers in searching for the suspect. Three Winthrop Harbor officers found the suspect hiding in a trailer parked at a storage yard, took him into custody and recovered a handgun.
On Aug. 12 at around 10:15 p.m. the Mobile gas station at 847 Sheridan Road was robbed, according to a release. After an investigation, a suspect was captured by Kenosha Police Department officers and is still being held there, it said.
Winthrop Harbor said the cases could not have been solved without the cooperation of the other police departments, including the Zion, Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha City and Kenosha County police departments.
