An 18-year-old Hammond woman is in stable condition after she was shot in the head Thursday evening at a Hammond gas station, after which a police chase ensued, according to a release.

Hammond officers responded at around 6:30 p.m. to Hudson Gas Station at 169th Street and Arizona Avenue in the city’s Hessville section, spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said Thursday. Witnesses there said a black man with short hair and a multicolored sweater was standing outside his car when he started shooting at another car that pulled into the lot, Kellogg said.

The victim drove a short distance before contacting police, he said. She was was taken to a local hospital, where she was able to give detectives a description of the car to police, he said.

Whiting Police Department officers at 6:50 p.m. located the vehicle and tried to stop it, but it fled, eventually crashing in East Chicago, Kellogg said. The three people in the car — two men, 27 and 30, respectively and a  21-year-old woman — tried to run from the vehicle but were arrested by Whiting, East Chicago and Hammond police, Kellogg said.

Charges were expected to be filed Friday against the three, Kellogg said.  Anyone with further information can contact Hammond Detective Sgt. Brian Webber at 219-852-2967.
