A fire that began in the basement of an Aurora home Saturday left five people displaced, Aurora Fire Department officials said Wednesday.

Fire crews were dispatched around 8:38 p.m. Saturday to fight the fire at a two-and-a-half-story home in the 600 block of West Galena Boulevard.

Officials said large amounts of storage inside the home made attacking the fire from the interior very difficult, leaving crews to extinguish the main part of the fire through basement windows from the outside.

The department used a warming trailer for firefighters to rotate through to get out of the single-digit temperatures for a few minutes at a time while battling the fire, according to officials.

The fire spread to the roof before it was extinguished. Crews used a police drone to locate spot fires during heavy smoke conditions during the blaze, officials said.

Around $300,000 of damage was caused as a result of the fire, officials said, and the house was deemed uninhabitable, with two adults and three children displaced.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, according to officials.
