‘The Harlem of the Midwest’ coming to IU Northwest stage

“The Price of Progress: The Indiana Avenue/IUPUI Story” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Indiana University Northwest Arts and Science Building Theater on campus, 3400 Broadway, Gary. The live production offers a glimpse into the story of an Indianapolis district, once dubbed “The Harlem of the Midwest,” before and after its decline prompted by suburban migration, gentrification, urban decay, interstate development and campus displacement. Back on Track to help immunize Gary children

MDwise, the Gary Health Department and the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) will host “Back on Track” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Edgewater Health, 1100 W. Sixth Ave., Gary. All routine childhood vaccinations including measles, mumps, rubella, polio and HPV will be available during the event, as well as the COVID vaccine for children age 5 and older. Wellness checks and COVID tests also will be available onsite. The event is open to everyone and will include free food, free school supplies and door prizes of $50 gift cards. Polish-American Cultural Society to meet

The Polish-American Cultural Society of Northwest Indiana Michigan City Chapter will hold a  meeting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Kostka School, 1506 Washington St., Michigan City. Join facilitator Father Wally Rakoczy in exploring Polish language, customs, and culture in a relaxed, informal setting. There is no membership fee, and meetings are open to the public. Those attending are asked to use the entrance between the church and the school; signs will provide directions to the meeting room, which is on the ground level. ‘Red, White and Black’ exhibit to feature local artists

In honor of Black History Month, the Hammond Development Corporation (HDC) will host a kick-off reception launching the “Red, White and Black” art exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday in its Creative HUB gallery, 5233 Hohman Ave., Hammond. The theme of the art exhibit focuses on the social, cultural and political life of Black America. Featured artists are as follows: Tyrell Anderson; Geoffrey Black; LaRon Emcee; En Emma; Erica Garcia; Joe Heredia; Lisa Jones;Eddie K.; Felix Maldonado, Jr.; Nec Pellot; and Tiffany Yorek.
