A Zion man has been charged in the killing of a man found shot inside a car this month in Waukegan, according to police and court records.
Jamonte J. Davis, 24, of Zion, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sergio Berrios. He was arrested Tuesday and was being held in the Lake County jail in lieu of $5 million bail on the murder count and other weapons and drug charges, according to jail and court records.
Berrios, a 42-year-old Beach Park resident, was found fatally shot on Oct. 3. Waukegan police responded around midnight to the 1300 block of Chestnut Street and found Berrios in the driver’s seat of a car parked in a driveway.
The vehicle had numerous bullet holes, and Berrios had been hit multiple times, authorities said. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but early in the investigation, police said the killing did not appear to be random.
Zion police had issued a warrant for Davis on weapons charges in September, court records say. Davis was on parole for a 2018 weapons conviction in Lake County, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. He spent about two years in custody on that conviction, records said.
