Why so many White letters right before the election?
In its last paper before Tuesday’s Naperville election, the Naperville Sun published four letters in its Letters to the Editor section regarding the mayoral candidates.
Two praised Benny White, one defended Mr. White for taking advantage of a legal property tax benefit and the fourth questioned the significance of his opponent Scott Wehrli’s police experience.
My unofficial scorecard: White – 4, Wehrli – 0.
I hadn’t decided at that point who I was voting for but c’mon, editors, at least try to be objective.
Paul Radzicki, Naperville
Editor’s note: We appreciate Mr. Radzicki’s letter and want our readers to know we published all the election letters we received in the order we received them. While it’s a common belief that we pick and choose those we publish, we do not. And certainly many letters favoring the candidacy of Mr. Wehrli, the winner of Tuesday’s election, were published in editions prior to April 2.
Edward-Elmhurst ‘violated trust’ in closing fitness center
I read with interest Hilary Decent’s column in the March 26 Naperville Sun about the complicated decision to close the Edward-Elmhurst Health & Fitness Center in Naperville.
South Region NorthShore Edward-Elmhurst Health President Joe Dant and Bridget McLemore, system vice president of operations for Edward-Elmhurst Health, presented the Edward-Elmhurst side of the story to which I would offer my response.
They stated it was a “very, difficult decision to make.” However, it’s apparent the decision itself wasn’t difficult. The poor communication, disrespect and insensitivity shown to the members and staff who have supported the fitness center and the Naperville community for decades were palpable during the expedited implementation of their plan.
Dant stated that “for a long time the health care portion has been supporting the fitness center, which has been running at a loss.” During that “long time,” there was little or no effort to generate revenue through creative marketing, new or updated wellness programs or even something as simple as a membership fee increase. Even so, many members retained their memberships.
Edward-Elmhurst’s Woodridge fitness facility cannot accommodate the total population and many members have been forced to look elsewhere to support their wellness needs.
Mr. Dant said “people trusted us for decades. Don’t give up on us because we had to make a difficult decision.”
That trust has been violated. All members asked is Edward-Elmhurst not give up on the Naperville fitness center just because we are experiencing challenging times.
