A Zion man wanted in the May shooting of his wife and another man has surrendered to police in New Mexico, Waukegan police said Friday.
An arrest warrant had been issued for Tomas Tapia, 42, after police said he shot his wife and a 25-year-old North Chicago man last month. Both victims survived, police said.
Tapia was traveling south with an unidentified person Thursday when he approached law enforcement officials in New Mexico and said there was a warrant for his arrest out of Waukegan.
After verifying the warrant, police in Lincoln County, N.M. took Tapia into custody. He was awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
Waukegan police responded at about 11:15 p.m. on May 24 to a parking lot in the 1300 block of Bridge Drive and found the two shooting victims, who identified Tapia as their assailant. Tapia and his wife were separated at the time of the shooting, police said.
Police found Tapia’s unoccupied vehicle a short time later and issued an arrest warrant the following day. Tapia is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
