A 57-year-old woman who was found in an apartment after a fire in the Austin neighborhood was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced deceased, Chicago police said.

Doctors at Stroger discovered the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg.

Shortly after 2:15 a.m., firefighters responded to a call at the 200 block of South Lavergne Avenue for a fire on the second and third floor of a residence, officials said.

No one was in custody, and detectives are investigating.
