Former international soccer star Angel Reyna is visiting Aurora this week to share his knowledge of the game with young people in the community.
Reyna is in town for four days, speaking to families and giving three days of soccer training to youths age 8 to 16.
At this week’s Aurora City Council Committee of the Whole meeting, Reyna received the Mayor’s Award of Excellence for his service.
Members said the star would share with “our kids what it takes to be great.”
A native of Mexico City, Reyna is considered one of the best attacking midfielders ever to play the game. During his career, he won two Gold Cups and played for several teams, including Guadalajara Chivas, Club America and C.F. Monterrey, before he retired.
Reyna shared his life story at a Community Talk Wednesday that was open to youth and families at West Aurora High School.
On Thursday through Saturday, Reyna will train about 500 youth through the city’s One Goal Aurora program. Registration for the training programs is mandatory at www.aurora-il.org/OneGoal.
The soccer training will be in Garfield Park, 852 Sheffer Road, on the city’s East Side.
