By the time cops arrived after the shooting, Nakeyia Anderson was standing behind a car in her Merrillville driveway.

“I’m well aware of what’s going on,” she said to the officers after crime scene tape was set up. “I just want to know if my husband is OK.”

As officers walked around, she asked someone out of view of the bodycam footage to call a lawyer. She learned later he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Anderson, now 43, is on trial charged with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony, in the July 18, 2021 fatal shooting of Tihomas Anderson, 44.

She has pleaded not guilty and faces 1-6 years in prison.

Police were called that night to the 5900 block of Harrison Street, where they found him on the ground, shot in the torso, according to charges.

She said they got into a fight after coming home from celebrating her birthday at a bar. She claimed during the fight, her husband grabbed the car keys of her silver Chevy Malibu to leave.

She got into the passenger seat and grabbed the gun inside, it states. She said the gun went off as they fought over it, charges state.

Prosecutors allege the shooting was reckless.

Her lawyer Scott King said it was an accident. She was not acting recklessly and was trying to get her gun away from him, King said, as her husband was likely drunk and no DNA or fingerprints were taken off the gun.

The trial continues Wednesday.
