One person was killed and another was critically injured after a fire tore through an apartment in Calumet Heights late Sunday night, police said.

The fire broke out in an eighth-floor apartment on the 9100 block of South Chicago Avenue at around 11:38 p.m.

A woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she later died. A 64-year-old man was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital and transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

The fire was caused by the careless use of smoking materials, CFD said.

No other injuries were reported, according to police.
