A 26-year-old man was charged with attempted murder following an exchange of gunfire with officers Monday night in the South Chicago neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Cordero Ramey, of the South Chicago neighborhood, was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and one count of possession of a firearm as a repeat felon. He also was charged with one count of possessing between 15 to 100 grams of heroin, police said.

Two tactical officers responded on Monday to a call of a man with a gun in the South Shore neighborhood, and eventually came across Ramey, who matched the suspect’s description. The officers attempted to conduct an investigatory stop in the 3100 block of East 83rd Street, but an exchange of gunfire erupted. Ramey was wounded during the exchange, and was taken to UChicago Medicine in serious condition, police said.

Ramey is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing Thursday afternoon.
