A Sugar Grove man has pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crash in 2024 that killed a pedestrian, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said on Thursday.
The fatal hit-and-run occurred on Oct. 12, 2024, near the 1900 block of Fays Lane in Sugar Grove. Police arriving on the scene found Elaine Zielke, 69, who lived in the Dugan Woods subdivision, lying in the street after being struck by an unknown vehicle, officials said.
The unknown vehicle and driver who hit Zielke fled the scene of the crash, police said at the time. Zielke was given medical assistance at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to officials.
Following a nine-month investigation, a Kane County grand jury in July returned an indictment charging Mark Wiskur, 47, of Sugar Grove, with failing to remain at the scene of an accident when he knew the accident involved death or injury to another person, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
A warrant was issued for Wiskur’s arrest, and he turned himself in to police later that day, the State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Wiskur ultimately pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a Class 1 felony, per the State’s Attorney’s Office.
He is next set to appear in court on Aug. 6 for sentencing, according to Kane County court records.
