Old Dominion 66, Rhode Island 14: Taylor Heinicke completed 28-of-35 passes for 293 yards and six touchdowns as the Monarchs rolled over the visiting Rams in a non-league game.
Antonio Vaughan, Larry Pinkard and Zach Pascal each caught two of Heinicke’s touchdown strikes as Old Dominion (6-3) won for the sixth time in seven games. Cam Boyd also ran for 119 yards and a touchdown for the Monarchs, who totaled 633 yards of offense.
Bob Bentsen threw for 167 yards and a pair of scores for Rhode Island (3-7), which lost for the fourth time in the last five contests. Ross Kim caught one of the touchdown passes for the Rams and registered three receptions for 84 yards.
Heinicke connected with Vaughan for a 12-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter and hit Pascal for 16 and a score early in the second for a 17-0 lead. Bentsen’s 41-yard scoring strike to Kim brought the Rams within 10, but Heinicke answered with touchdown passes to Vaughan for 34 yards and Pinkard for 10 as the Monarchs led 31-7 at halftime.
Pinkard and Pascal caught touchdown passes from Heinicke in the third quarter of 18 and 4 yards, respectively, to seal it for Old Dominion. Heinicke has thrown at least three touchdown passes in a game 19 times in his career.
