One male died and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Pleasant Township, police said.

Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department were called around 4:51 p.m. May 21 to the intersection of Ind. 8 and County Road 450 East, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, the department’s public information officer.

Donald Stewart, 59, of Kouts, died at the Franciscan Health Crown Point emergency room, according to a Friday release from the Lake County Coroner’s Office. A Thursday autopsy concluded Stewart died of multiple blunt force injuries and ruled his death an accident. Toxicology results are pending.

An initial investigation showed a Ford minivan was eastbound on Ind. 8 and a Jeep SUV driven by Stewart was westbound on Ind. 8 when the minivan entered the westbound lane and collided with the Jeep, police said.

Both male drivers had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment and Stewart died at 5:57 p.m. Wednesday.

The Porter County Crash Unit is investigating.

“Please keep the family and friends of the driver that passed in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” McFalls said, also thanking the agencies that assisted at the scene.
