Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Every time technology advances, older, outmoded methods become that much cooler and appreciated. Take printing. While it’s much easier to design projects on fancy computer software and print them on the latest inkjet machine, such creations often lack soul and personality. No wonder, then, that in recent years, interest in individually tailored concert posters and craft books has escalated. Or that savvy individuals prefer multidimensional business cards and fashionable invitations that stand out because of their character, texture and imagination. The secret behind these techniques and products? Letterpress printing.

A multilevel class designed for beginners as well as those who already know the procedures, Lillstreet Art Center’s Introduction to Letterpress and Image & Text teaches students the art of typesetting by hand and the basics of cylinder, platen and sign presses. Don’t recognize all those terms? Not to worry. When you’re finished with the class, you’ll have them down pat, understand how to work the requisite tools and feel confident exploring your own ideas. Expressive types, here’s your chance to flourish: The once-a-week course, starting July 13 and running through August, encourages experimentation with ink and paper.
