Ivy Tech to host virtual silent auction
Ivy Tech Community College is launching its first virtual silent auction at 2 p.m. Thursday, to be followed by a live-streamed auction at 6 p.m. Monday. More than 100 items donated by community individuals and/or businesses will be up for bidding. Proceeds will benefit the Lake County and Valparaiso/Michigan City campuses, whose “Impacting Student Needs” initiative provides financial support to students to help achieve their academic and career goals. Miller Beach Arts and Creative District now open
The Miller Beach Arts and Creative District has reopened to the public featuring the exhibit “Living Mid-Century,” acrylic paintings by Dan Nelson, from 6-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and from 2-4 p.m. Sundays through July 11 at 540 S. Lake St., Gary. An exhibit by urban photographers Matthew Kaplan and Robin Michals will be featured from July 18-Aug. 2. Those visiting the gallery are asked to wear masks and maintain a social distance from other patrons. A $5 entrance fee is requested to help defray lost income and the cost of increased cleaning and PPE throughout the rest of the year. More information can be found at millerbeacharts.org.
Heritage Day at Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum will host Heritage Day beginning at 12:30 p.m. July 4 at 507 Mulberry St., North Judson. Round-trip train excursions will depart at 12:30 and 2 p.m. and travel through the countryside to the small town of English Lake before returning to the depot. On the museum grounds, living history re-enactment displays will be featured. Admission is free. Advanced train reservations are recommended, as seating is limited due to Covid-19 guidelines. Lake County Public Library to begin in-person service
Although curbside service has been available for several weeks, Lake County Public Library is set to reopen their doors for in-person service at the main library, 1919 W. 81st Ave., Merrillville. The library will begin providing computer appointments on Monday and additional services on July 6. Most other branches also will reopen July 6 with the exception of Hobart and Highland branches, which will open slightly later. Dates are subject to change. To accommodate limited capacity, the reopening will begin with appointment based use of the facilities and time limits. All employees and patrons will be required to wear masks. Hospital offers diabetes education opportunities
Porter Regional Hospital offers a variety of diabetes education for the community. Diabetes Self-Management Classes will be held each Thursday in July from 5:30-7:30 p.m. beginning July 7 on the main campus, 85 E. US-6, Valparaiso. Classes are offered on a rotating basis monthly. A physician’s order is required. Class sizes are limited to ensure proper social distancing and masks must be worn. Registration is required at 219-263-7992. Individual appointments also are available with a physician’s order. Appointments can be arranged with either a certified diabetes educator or registered dietitian, depending on treatment method and needs: insulin administration, injectables, gestational diabetes, continuous glucose monitoring and nutritional education.
