
A Merrillville man was charged with murder after fatally stabbing a man at a hotel early Saturday.
Around 1 a.m., Merrillville officers responded to a report of a fight at the Woodspring Suites, located at 1500 E. 83rd Avenue, according to a Merrillville Police news release. Upon arrival, they noticed a man who had been stabbed in the neck and tried to assist him before medics arrived.
Police apprehended the suspect, Nelson Alvarez-Godoy, who was still on scene, the release states. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the staff. The victim’s identity has not been released by the Lake County Coroner’s Office, pending notification of his family.
Charges were presented to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office and accepted on Saturday, police said. Alvarez-Godoy is charged with murder, battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony; and two misdemeanor battery charges, according to court records
Nelson is currently being held without bail in the Lake County Jail.
