Antioch police said they have charged a man with a November break-in at a business during which more than $100,000 was stolen.
Police said Thursday that Quinn M. Cahill, 28, of Round Lake Beach, is facing burglary and theft over $100,000 charges.
Authorities said they were called Nov. 27 to the 900 block of Illinois Route 59 for the reported burglary. Security footage showed an intruder who broke into the business and stole a safe containing more than $100,000 in currency.
An investigation pointed to Cahill as the alleged perpetrator, police said.
“This arrest is the result of months of persistent investigative work by our detectives and officers,” Police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow said. “I want to especially commend our detectives for their outstanding efforts in investigating this case, identifying the offender, and safely taking him into custody. Their work not only solved this crime, but removed the offender from our community.”
State association president
Zion Police Chief Eric Barden was sworn in this month as the president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
Barden took the oath for his one-year term at the annual IACP convention in Springfield. Gurnee Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan was sworn in as the third vice president for the group.
IACP represents police chiefs from all over Illinois, provides training and advocacy, and is a source of advice on public safety issues.
“As president, Chief Barden will help guide the organization’s strategic direction, promote professional development, and address the evolving challenges facing modern policing,” the city of Zion said in a social media post.
Barden’s appointment will help strengthen law enforcement partnerships and help the group’s ongoing mission of providing professional policing across Illinois.
The IACP, which was founded in 1941, has more than 1,600 members from 460 law enforcement agencies.
Victim identified
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman who was shot to death on March 11 after she allegedly advanced on Mundelein police officers while armed with two knives.
Mary Alice Love, 37, died from multiple gunshot wounds, the coroner’s office said.
Mundelein police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Ashbrook Drive for a report of a suicidal subject. Police said they were talking inside the house to the person who had alerted police when Love, who had been in the back patio area, entered the residence through a sliding door.
Police said she had two knives and advanced on officers, one of whom shot Love. She was brought to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was called in to investigate the shooting.
Commendation Medal
Waukegan Police Sgt. John Spiewak was recently honored by the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System for his decade of work with the group.
NIPAS recognized Spiewak with its Commendation Medal for his service with the group’s Mobile Field Force.
“Over the past decade, Sgt. Spiewak served as both a Bicycle Response Team (BRT) member and BRT sergeant, contributing greatly to the team’s operational effectiveness and the successful resolution of countless critical incidents. His professionalism, leadership, and commitment to service have brought great credit to himself, the Waukegan Police Department, and NIPAS,” WPD said in a Facebook post.
Holiday weekend patrols
The Memorial Day holiday weekend is almost upon us. It is a time when many people hit the road for an extended weekend.
Local law enforcement will also be out in force, with many departments announcing they will beef up patrols over the May 22-25 weekend.
Police will be focusing on the things that can cause major accidents, like speeding or distracted driving, and things like not wearing a safety belt, which can turn an accident into a tragedy. Click it or ticket!
