The driver who was fatally shot on Interstate 88 in DeKalb County following a suburban police chase Monday has been identified as Joseph Moreno, 36, of Warrenville, according to the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.
The shooting occurred Monday afternoon, on I-88 westbound near Keslinger Road near the border of Kane and DeKalb counties, officials said.
A Naperville police officer had located a vehicle near Route 59 and North Aurora Road that was wanted in connection with a missing person reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, according to a press release earlier this week from the Illinois State Police. Police said the driver showed a firearm and then fled in the vehicle, the release said.
Officers from the Warrenville Police Department ultimately located the vehicle and began a pursuit, which Illinois State Police became involved in when it entered I-88 westbound, according to the release.
After the vehicle was stopped on I-88 near Keslinger, both the driver and a Warrenville police officer reportedly discharged their firearms, the release said. The driver of the vehicle sustained a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead, officials said. No officers were injured in the incident.
Since then, the driver has been identified as Joseph Moreno, 36, of Warrenville, per the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office. Next of kin have already been notified, officials said.
The DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Moreno’s death, a news release from the Coroner’s Office said. The cause and manner of death are still pending, pending forensic and toxicology results.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is investigating the Warrenville officer’s use of force, according to the release. State Police Division of Internal Investigation special agents are investigating the state police’s involvement in the incident.
